This collection consists of the certificate appointing John Herschel Glenn, Jr. as a citizen member of the National Air Museum advisory board.
President Harry S. Truman signed 1946 Public Law 722 on August 12, 1946, establishing the National Air Museum as part of the Smithsonian Institution. The law also created an advisory board for the museum composed of the Commanding General of the Army Air Forces, the Chief of Naval Operations, the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and two citizens appointed by the President. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed John Herschel Glenn, Jr. as a citizen member of the advisory board.

This collection consists of the certificate appointing John Herschel Glenn, Jr. as a citizen member of the National Air Museum advisory board. The certificate, dated December 3, 1965, measures 22.75 by 19 inches and bears the presidential seal. The certificate is signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and by Secretary of State Dean Rusk. The certificate is marked on the bottom as being printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
